A set of two CD-ROMs has been released by Pathology Images Inc, 2428 Rosewood Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario K2B7L4, Canada ( http://www.pathologyimagesinc.com ), authored by Irving Dardick, Sudha Kini, Grace Bradley, Linda Lee and Iona Leong. These CD-ROMs are available separately and together. They are user-friendly, interactive, run on any version of Microsoft - windows 98 or XP and no additional software is required.
Irving Dardick is a Professor Emeritus, Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology in University of Toronto, Canada. Sudha Kini is the Division Head, Cytopathology, Henry Ford Hospital, Detroit, USA. She is also well known world over as an authority on thyroid lesions. Grace Bradley, Linda Lee and Iona Leong are professors in the faculty of Dentistry, University of Toronto, Canada.
Salivary tumors and salivary type tumors are the most widespread. They occur not only in the classical locations like major and minor salivary glands, but also in various sites like respiratory passages, lachrymal glands, breast, cervix and anywhere in the skin. Tumors, tumor mimics, variation in histomorphology of tumor sub-types pose diagnostic difficulties in salivary glands. CD_ROM of Salivary gland tumor, oral and surgical pathology provides a comprehensive coverage of text, images, classifications, diagnostic difficulties and bibliography of all lesions. The images need special mention for their excellent quality and clarity. The authors have provided lucid images of light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, histochemical stains and electron microscopy. Illustrative cases deal with the diagnostic difficulties and are educative.
CD_ROM of salivary gland tumor cytopathology has text of introduction, classification, cytological criteria and diagnostic difficulties of a myriad of lesions. The stain used for the cytological preparation is Papanicolaou stain. The images are excellent and all the lesions of the salivary glands are covered. Once, at an open forum, an onco-surgeon questioned the utility of cytopathology as, in salivary tumors, the surgical option is parotidectomy and the imaging is the only thing the surgeon requires. This comprehensive, descriptive and illustrative work on cytopathology will give practicing cytopathologists all the confidence required to deal with the problems they face.
These two CD-ROMs are excellent teaching materials for pathologists and cytopathologists in training; institutions involved in the post-graduate teaching should possess them.
